Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16.
Celebrations are usually held in Mexican restaurants but we have an acute shortage of these eateries in the Subic Bay area. Dos Amigos on SBMA and Nina Papagayos in Barrio Barretto. Zapata's in Angeles City is about as good as we can get.
In Subic several places are planning celebrations and specials this Saturday:
- Doc's Hooyah along the strip in Barretto is offering a free sampling of tamales, salsa and chips, refried beans and Spanish rice if you buy a drink.
- Westpac Sailor (VFW) is serving a Mexican plate plus free side dishes such as chili provided by the members. You do not have to be a member and this is shaping up to be a culinary experience.
- Texas Joe's on SBMA is discounting their Mexican dishes including the Ultimate Nachos which are some of the best on earth. They will also be showcasing a new menu item, Carnitas are an authentic Mexican street food. Margaritas will be half price. A band called the Good Ol Boys with Dez will play both Friday and Saturday night.
