Readers Thoughts on Olongapo River Dredging

Bugle headlines "Dredging Starts in Olongapo" when the propaganda articles Bugle submits state they have acquired a backhoe and 2 used dump trucks. Good job Bugle. Maybe if you stop the bullshit, that will help stop some of the flow into the river. The real story is Olongapo has a 5.1 BILLION PESO DEFICIT and no one is being held accountable. Where did the BILLIONS go??? Nothing has changed or ever will. Read in the foreign press that Yolanda relief supplies are already on sale in Makati. It's a month since the disaster and already the scams are evident.

Bugle Responds:  How is it that we are getting blamed now for propaganda?  There are many thoughts that could be taken from the article, your thoughts are just one of them.  One could at least think that something and somebody is starting to do something or you can just start trumpeting about corruption.  We just report information you can jump to any conclusions that you want to.

  1. 3.4 Billion in aid and humanitarian relief from the US Agency for International Development(USAID) to the Philippines in the past 5 years! Where has the money gone? Nobody knows...

Seen any major infrastructure improvements in Olongapo recently? The mayor was in the US during the flood. Did he bring back the part needed for the dredger that has been inop for so long. There is the 4th largest shipyard in the world and a major Ship Repair Facility under the auspices of SBMA within visible range of the broken dredger. They have the ability to manufacture any part, you would think.

This article was in the Philippine Inquirer shortly after the flood.

MANILA, Philippines — The United States has provided P4.3 million ($100,000) in aid to the Philippines to bring aid to those affected by flooding and landslides in Zambales and Bataan, the US Embassy in Manila said on Thursday.
The amount will be used to provide urgent relief needs, including water purification and hygiene supplies to some 10,000 affected people, according to the embassy’s statement.
“On behalf of the U.S. Government and the American people, we extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected,” said US Ambassador to the Philippine Harry Thomas Jr.
Monsoon rains and flooding wrought by typhoon “Odette” caused unprecedented flooding and landslides in Subic, Zambales, former home of US naval bases, and parts of Bataan on Monday.
Thomas cited cooperation among affected communities and vowed to continue working with the Philippines in the relief efforts.
“I would like to commend the “bayanihan” spirit demonstrated by the communities in helping those in need. We will work with our Philippine Government counterparts to boost their relief efforts and help the victims overcome this tragedy,” Thomas said.
The US, through the US Agency for International Development, has been among the top providers of aid for the Philippines, giving some P3.4 billion in humanitarian assistance to calamity-hit residents across the country in the last five years.

The best thing that could be done for the Philippines is to stop giving them AID... They have been an independent, sovereign country for nearly 70 years already. But they don't seem to know how to be one... They are long overdue for learning how. But we all know they never will. Stop the corruption...

  2. Hey Bugle.. your tag line above "It is what it is", says it all. We all choose to live here for one reason or another. Even the ones that bitch and moan continue to live here for one reason or another. The PI will always be the PI. No point trying to change anything and equally no point bitching about it all the time. Go with the flow and enjoy the good things, understanding that we are in a 3rd world banana republic and it's precisely for that reason many of us choose to live here. Not to change it and make it like home, but to embrace it with all it's warts because it's fun and exciting to be an expat. Floods? Admit that it's going to happen again, and prepare. Don't get wiped out and then sit back and complain. Why worry about the crooks and politicians (oops.. redundant)? Worry about yourself and your loved ones and your buddies.

  3. Bugle sez, "We just report information." In reality, Bugle's information often seems to be so over-whelmingly one-sided, it's absurd. You might remember Bugle's comments that stated the US would be envious of the success at bankrupt Subic and Clark, as one outrageous example. More recently, Bugle headlined that "Dredging Starts" on the Olongapo river. The mayor standing next to two dump trucks, a back hoe and a very small ditch is no indication that any dredging has started. It's not even dredging equipment he has on display.

The dredger is still dead on the scene, stuck in the mud. It would be comical, if it wasn't for the fact that peoples lives depend on successful dredging of the river. Maybe I should have provided a photo of my son in a sandbox with a shovel and bucket as a near equal input to rival the mayor's photo op.

Also, wasn't it Bugle that was telling contributors recently to: "Go Home" and calling them bigots and racists. I believe, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." Don't be so thin-skinned when the criticism is directed at your opinions, Bugle. It's not personal... We don't even know you, di ba?

Also, I would ask that you print all comments, even if they don't agree with your opinions. The informal consensus among several of us is that many comments, roughly estimated to be at least one-third, are not being published on your site, just because they don't agree with Bugle opinions. Besides, Bugle is averaging one comment a day. Would it be possible to "turn it up a notch" to get more information and comments in circulation?

So maybe now, it's a little more clear why we think Bugle is in the mode of spreading propaganda...

You are right on one point though... It's up to your readers to decide. But they should get all sides of information and opinions, not just Bugle's side on information and comments.

Put every comment out there, so we can decide for ourselves... Isn't that your intent?
