What Does Freeport Really Mean in Subic?

Comment from a reader: Subic Bay Freeport and Duty Free Zone!!!  Now just what does that mean?  I can understand that if it is offloaded from a ship in Subic then the thus the duty free.  However it seems that all other items have the same or higher price than in Olongapo or other surrounding areas.  Or is it just for goods shipped out of SBMA?  If i ship a vehicle from the usa and offload in SBMA, are there duties associated?  Just seems a bit confusing and no one has been able to answer this question in which is well understood.

  1. It's a Freeport to all the smugglers and cops, who extort money from people.
